Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the position of Assistant to the Director of Athletics and Athletic Trainer Intern. This is a 35 hour per week, casual position without benefits that goes until June 2019. The position is in the college’s Department of Physical Education and Athletics. The internship is funded by the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Grant. This grant is designed to provide financial assistance to the division’s member schools and conferences that are committed to enhancing ethic minority and gender representation in entry-level, intercollegiate athletics administrative positions.
Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
The Assistant to the Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer Intern will be systematically exposed to a range of key Athletic Department administrative duties, while given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an Athletic Trainer. The intern will be mentored and guided by seasoned administrators, and given access to a new Staff Leadership Development Program run by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
The intern will be exposed to a range of skills and responsibilities including athletic department operations, game management, tournament direction, community building, diversity and athletic training clinical practice. Will also collaborate with mentors to develop goals and a work plan based on individual interests. The plan may include a variety of activities, but at least 70% of the work will focus on athletic administration and 30% on athletic training services. In addition, the Intern takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Work Schedule:
Our work is central to the students involved in athletics activities and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule is required.
