Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Associate Director of Student Activities position. The Associate Director of Student Activities is a full time, year round position, job group and level SM-2. Reporting to the Director of Student Activities, the Associate Director of Student Activities has primary responsibility for the operations of the Keefe Campus Center, Powerhouse, and Ford Hall event spaces. This person will serve as the advisor for the Campus Activities Board (CAB), the College’s student-run programming board and will oversee the execution of hallmark CAB events and manage the programming board’s budget. This position participates in the creation and implementation of campus programming and events aimed at creating an engaged and diverse campus life for Amherst College students. Supports, advises, and directs resources to support the development of Registered Student Organizations and student leaders. Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Work schedule: The Associate Director must have the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends to attend events by Student Activities and Amherst College student groups.
Key Responsibilities
Event and Program Development
- Advises and supports the Campus Activities Board (CAB). Coordinates, executes, and evaluates CAB hallmark programming, such as Farm Fest, Homecoming Bonfire, and Spring Concert, in addition to a variety of small-scale programs. Oversees annual budget and manages CAB co-sponsorship funding requests.
- Coordinates marketing, advertising material, and social media for Student Activities and CAB sponsored events/programs.
- Builds partnerships and collaborations across departments to provide campus-wide programs and events designed to build community and foster student engagement on campus.
Facility Management
- Oversee the hiring, training, and evaluation of Campus Center Managers and Event Managers for the Powerhouse and Ford Hall event space.
- Provides operational and programmatic support for both large and small-scale events at the Powerhouse and the Ford Hall event space.
- Responsible for coordinating the management of Keefe Campus Center in collaboration with Amherst College Facilities, Informational Technology, and the Administrative Assistant of Student Life.
- Maintain the reservation system for the Powerhouse, Ford Hall, and the Greenway D Fitness Studio.
- Serves as the primary administrator of the Event Management System on behalf of the Office of Student Activities
Student Organizational Support
- Provides support, management, advising, coaching, leadership development, and mentorship for student leaders and over 100 Registered Student Organizations.
- Maintains and oversees the student event registration process using the CampusLabs Engage platform and works closely with leaders of Registered Student Organizations to assist in the successful execution of events.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises one part-time professional staff member who serves as the Student Activities Nighttime Coordinator.
- Responsible for the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluations of five student event managers and a staff of 30 campus center student managers to assist in event support needs in Keefe Campus Center, Powerhouse, and Ford Hall event venues.
Qualifications:
Required
- Master's Degree in higher education administration, educational leadership, student development, counseling, or a related field.
- 2-4 years of experience in student affairs/activities
- Experience in student-staff training, program development, and program creation
- Strong supervision and programming experience
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite programs and the ability to learn new software programs
- Robust understanding of academic priorities, the educational mission of institutions, and ways in which student activities, programs and functions can promote student engagement, advance student learning, and contribute to achieving desired learning goals
- Strong time-management, organizational, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to be resourceful and solve problems creatively
- Experience in managing event and program budgets
- Evidence-based commitment to supporting a diverse student community. Commitment to fostering inclusive communities through leadership and programming.
- An acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check.
Preferred
- Knowledge of principles and practices of student activities programs and services at comparable colleges and universities.
- Working knowledge of Virtual EMS and Campus Labs Engage platform.
