Description:
The Laboratory Technical Specialist is a full-time, year-round position, job group and level PT-3. The Laboratory Technical Specialist supports the teaching and research efforts of the Biology Department, in the area of Molecular Biology, by maintaining and curating departmental equipment and materials used in molecular analysis, and overseeing and training students in use of shared instruments. Assists faculty with laboratory preparations for courses and research needs, complementary with efforts of other Biology Staff.
Key Responsibilities
Scientific Equipment and Instruments
- Provide technical assessment and training associated with shared equipment and instruments used in molecular/cellular teaching and research.
- Maintain electronic curatorial information on shared equipment, instruments, and reagents, including storage location and usage information.
- Manage maintenance and usage of shared equipment such as centrifuges, qRTPCR, gel imaging systems, and incubators.
Teaching Laboratory Support
- Prepare reagents and biological materials for teaching labs, such as reagents, fruit flies and cell cultures, coordinating with responsibilities of other Departmental staff.
Environmental Demands
- Exposure to biohazards and chemical hazards
- Lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds (re-positioning and transferring equipment)
Qualifications:
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or affiliated field OR Associate’s Degree in a relevant field with at least five years of experience working in a relevant research environment
