Amherst College invites applications for the Ombudsperson position. The Ombudsperson provides guidance and improves the understanding of the College’s policies and procedures while fostering and advocating for a fair, equitable and respectful work environment for all faculty and staff. The Ombudsperson listen to concerns, promotes equitable resolutions, fosters communication, provides information and referral services, serves as a resource to facilitate and improve conflict management, and provides the administration with insights into workplace trends and recommends steps to improve employee morale and engagement.
The Ombudsperson seeks to assure equity and fairness by:
- Providing a safe, confidential, neutral and independent place where issues can be raised
- Helping faculty and staff clarify issues and concerns
- Helping faculty and staff generate options and identify available resources
- Offering conflict resolution services, such as group facilitation, informal mediation and conflict management trainings, when appropriate and as requested
This is a part-time, non-benefited, 12 hours per week, twelve months per year position.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience in a similar role, preferably at an academic institution
- Experience working with a diverse community; awareness and understanding of diversity issues
- Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution, mediation, collaboration and negotiation skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work well with individuals at all institutional levels
- Able to handle confidential matters with discretion;
- Must be a member or willing to become a member of the International Ombudsman Association, and to practice according to the guiding principles of that professional association
