Armstrong State University

Armstrong State University is located in Savannah, within twenty-five miles of some of Georgia's most beautiful coastline. Each year, millions visit Savannah, founded in 1733, for its famous historic squares and charming oaks draped with Spanish moss. Since its founding 73 years ago by the City of Savannah, Armstrong has become a vibrant 268-acre, urban campus of more than 6,800 traditional and non-traditional students serving a wider community of 312,100 residents.

The university offers programs at two other centers in the coastal Georgia area. It operates The Liberty Center in Hinesville and is a cooperative partner at The Brunswick Center, located at College of Coastal Georgia. With a challenging array of some 100 academic programs, including undergraduate and graduate degree programs in arts and sciences, teacher education, the health professions, and computing, Armstrong provides its students with a firm foundation in both the liberal arts and specialized areas of study.

The student body is primarily female with the majority of students attending full time. Students round out their university experience with extra-curricular activities such as intramural sports, NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics, and more than 70 professional organizations, honor societies, Greek organizations, student publications, and student government. Athletic activities take place in the 2,000-seat Alumni Arena. Arts opportunities include student dramatic, choral, and instrumental groups. Residential life with its broad array of lively activities, is a fast-growing part of life at Armstrong.

With more than 200 events open to the public each year, Armstrong is a cultural center for the Savannah area. The university hosts internationally-known speakers, contemporary concerts, popular films, art exhibits, and performances by classical and modern artists.

Serving the region is one of the hallmarks of Armstrong and the university historically has shared its expertise with individuals and organizations throughout Southeast Georgia. It serves as a regional health professions center, a regional criminal justice training center and is part of the Georgia Tech Regional Engineering Program to serve the growing field of engineering.

Founded in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College, the institution became a two-year unit of the University System of Georgia in 1959 and a four-year college in 1966. It became Armstrong Atlantic State University in 1996.
