Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Academic Counselor will have responsibility for providing academic and career advising, assisting program participants in overcoming barriers to participation, and helping students develop, set, and achieve academic and career goals.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Serve as academic and career advisor to a caseload of ESOL students assisting with AEC course placement, attendance, personal matters that affect participation in their education program, education and career advising, and other concerns related to student academic success and/or job transitions.
- Meet with students individually and in groups to explain AEC program services to ensure students understand and abide by program expectations.
- Follow Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) advising guidelines; assist students with stating and meeting long-term and short-term goals.
- Document and record students' goal setting activities and outcomes using ESE and AEC requirements and forms.
- Collaborate with administrators, teachers and other advisors to devise systems which will effectively integrate ESE advising mandates.
- Coordinate and participate in the semi-annual intake, assessment and class placement of learners in cooperation with other AEC program staff.
- Monitor student attendance and follow up with students, teachers and other staff regarding absences to support students in meeting 75% attendance objective.
- Meet with teachers and appropriate administrative staff to assist in the resolution of student or classroom issues.
- Assist students in establishing and maintaining liaisons with High School Equivalency Test Center staff, College admissions, career planning, transfer, registration and financial aid personnel and collaborate with CCCC offices/departments and other referring support/counseling programs and community agencies that benefit adult learners.
- Assess the need for outside services, research those services and makes appropriate referrals; make referrals, as necessary, and maintain positive rapport with appropriate public and private social service and health agencies.
- Maintain confidential records of advising notes and activities for each student.
- Administer standardized tests, as needed.
- Use OMEGA, SMARTT, Cognos and other AEC data systems for recording student data and notes.
- Assist in developing and conducting follow-up with students to track student retention, college enrollment, career choices, and employment.
- Work day and evening hours advising students in morning and evening AEC classes.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and required activities and participates in ongoing local and state-wide professional development training and conferences and assist in the training of other AEC staff, as needed.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of all matters pertaining to AEC program goals.
- Assist with special projects as needed.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, student services, adult basic education, ESOL studies or a related discipline.
- Three years of experience working with Adult Learners with demonstrated ability to relate to the needs and interests of adult students enrolled in ABE, ESOL, and HiSET courses.
- Demonstrated experience with multicultural students.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to collaborate.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with Cape Cod social service agencies.
- Demonstrated experience using information technology including entering and manipulating information in a database format, and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.

- Multi-lingual.
Additional Information:
COMPENSATION: $27.00 per hour for up to 10 hours per week, 2 hours/month for staff meetings and 12 hours/year of professional development. Approximate period of employment: November 2018 - June 2019. Non-benefited, grant-funded, MCCC Unit Position.
