Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructor(s) are responsible for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in a respectful, student-centered, culturally inclusive setting while adhering to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) guidelines under the Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS) unit.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Align all curriculum, instruction, and lesson plans to incorporate lead learning standards from the Massachusetts ESOL Curriculum Frameworks.
- Develop students' academic, metacognitive, and digital literacy skills.
- Follow research-based best practices for effective adult learning when delivering the AEC ESOL Scope and Sequence for the appropriate level of instruction.
- Use a variety of instructional methods, techniques, and tools, including, but not limited to scaffolding and differentiated instruction to accommodate differences in learning styles, toward increasing student skills in English language listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Work with advisors on an ongoing basis to incorporate into instruction individualized electronic student career and education activities, including, but not limited to: goal exploration; an inventory of each student's interests/values/aspirations; skills inventory; computer exploration of occupational choices that relate to student interests and skills; and assisting students in recording of activity exploration outcomes in the AEC My Life Plan digital portfolio.
- Teach the required number of sessions weekly/yearly (adding make-up sessions for snow days when needed).
- Prepare and submit weekly lesson plans that align with the AEC Curriculum/Scope & Sequence for the appropriate level.
- Monitor and record student attendance accurately on a daily basis; communicate attendance challenges in a timely manner to advising staff and/or program administrators; submit student and volunteer attendance records at the end of the last class of each month.
- Refer students to advising or administrative staff, when appropriate.
- Continuous and timely communication with advising and administrative staff regarding any student, class, curriculum, and programmatic challenges or issues.
- Attend scheduled staff meetings and participate in ongoing curriculum and continuous improvement program development meetings.
- Submit all required documentation in accordance with deadlines.
- Assist with intake, orientation, and assessment of new students.
- Arrange for substitute teachers (in advance) when needed and providing appropriate lesson plans for them.
- Manage and coach classroom volunteers to assist with delivery of the AEC ESOL curriculum.
- Attend at least 12 hours of professional development opportunities per academic year, as required for program facilitation and as per DESE guidelines. New staff will attend DESE required New Staff Orientation sessions.
- Complete and document (E5) college service, monthly staff meetings, and professional development.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in education or another related field.
- Three years or more experience in ESOL adult education, with demonstrated ability to relate to the needs and interests of adult students.
- Experience using ongoing formative and summative assessments to inform teaching.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of diverse adult populations in ABE programs.
- Ability to teach Digital Literacy skills to students.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Experience with multicultural students.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual educator.
- Experience teaching basic math skills.
- Knowledge of the Massachusetts ABE System.
- Knowledge of assessments used in the Massachusetts ABE system.
Additional Information:
COMPENSATION: $28.29 per hour for up to 6 hours of class time per week and 3 hours of planning time, 2 hours/month for staff meetings and 12 hours/year of professional development. Approximate period of employment: November 2018 - June 2019. Non-benefited, grant-funded, MCCC Unit Position.
