Job Summary/Purpose: |
: To provide instruction in an established Dental Assisting Program. The individual holding this position will provide instruction in the Dental Assisting in accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) requirements. •This is a part-time (< .50 FTE) non-benefited position, hired on a term-by-term basis. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments. |
Essential Functions: |
Provide instruction, guidance and assessment in the lab and clinic settings within the Dental Assisting Program. This may include didactic instruction in the classroom depending on education and experience. Courses that may be taught include, but are not limited to, Infection Control, Basic and Advanced Dental Assisting, Dental Materials, Preventive Dentistry and Dental Radiology. Part-time instruction requires approximately 25 contact hours per month. This a cohort program with up to 24 students enrolled in the Dental Assisting Program beginning each Fall Term. Lecture and guide in-classroom activities, online/web-based lab activities, provide individual conference time to guide and evaluate student progress. Teaching assignments may include courses taught during the day and/or evening, classes taught on or off campus. Assist and direct students in the onsite Dental Clinic. In partnership with Deschutes County Health Services, COCC offers an on-site Dental Clinic. This clinic is held in the COCC Dental Lab/Clinic and is offered 6-10 Fridays per term. Responsibilities may include ordering and maintaining supplies, instruments and equipment; scheduling patients and volunteer dentists; supervising student dental assistants; partnering with the volunteer dentist and dental assisting faculty to provide quality care to the patients. Provide one hour of office time per week per course to guide and evaluate student progress. Utilize resources, including technological resources such as Blackboard, to provide current course content and to record grades. Conduct classroom presentations and activities; incorporate new methodologies in teaching and technology into classes Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to each location, by required deadlines relevant to part-time instructor teaching assignments, as assigned. |
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: |
1. Thorough knowledge in the field of General Dental Assisting. 2.Visual ability, corrected, to enable Dental Assisting instructors to observe, direct, and supervise students in laboratory situations. 3.Ability to operate or oversee the operation of computers. 4.Ability to communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing. 5.Ability to review, understand and apply concepts presented in training programs, conferences, and/or professional literature. 6.Ability to work with faculty and other COCC staffs at all levels. 7.Ability to work cooperatively with and contribute to a diverse workplace through ideas or experience. |
Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements: |
Work is performed in classroom and office environments with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to use computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary conversations. Computer screen is used frequently. Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs. Travel throughout the College district as needed. A flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the position responsibilities. The employee is required to meet physical and ergonomic requirements of the program area as this may vary from positions. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
