Columbus State University

Columbus State University, a member of the University System of Georgia, is located 100 miles southwest of Atlanta on the banks of the churning Chattahoochee River in the state’s third largest city. The university, ranked No. 46 among public universities in the South by U.S. News & World Report, enrolls more than 8,000 students in programs that range from a pre-engineering certificate to a doctorate in education.

The university’s beautifully manicured150-acre main campus is adjacent to the airport, the interstate and a shopping mall. The campus features a full complement of contemporary buildings and a range of recreational, cultural and athletic facilities. In addition to co-educational intramural and recreational programs, students participate in more than 100 different student groups, sororities and fraternities, honor societies, club sports and special-interest organizations. The Columbus State University Cougars compete mostly in NCAA Division II with a full range of men's and women's sports.

Just a few miles from main campus, Columbus State University has a strong presence in historic downtown Columbus — Uptown to locals — with loft-style studios and warehouse-chic apartments for students, a space science center and fine and performing arts venues that include some of the country's most sophisticated teaching and performing spaces.

With about a dozen different buildings in the downtown area, the university calls this campus CSU RiverPark. It’s home to about 450 students, several academic programs —including the College of the Arts — and an assortment of places to eat, gather and hang out.

Downtown Columbus also will become home to the world's longest urban whitewater experience in 2013. Work is under way on the Chattahoochee River — at the back door of Columbus State University’s RiverPark campus — to breach two dams and create whitewater rafting, kayaking, tubing, river surfing and other water activities along a 2.5-mile stretch of the river between Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL.

The whitewater project is yet another example of Columbus’ commitment being a destination for history, theatre, arts, sports and more. The city of Columbus is also home to several local museums, an outstanding symphony, the historic Springer Opera House, arena football and the Riverwalk along the Chattahoochee River.

Just south of Columbus, Fort Benning’s Maneuver Center of Excellence remains the nation’s premier training and staging area for Infantry and Armor units of the U.S. Army. A half-hour north of Columbus are the golf paths and nature trails of Callaway Gardens resort, as well as the state’s largest park, Roosevelt State Park, encompassing the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail traversing the mountain of the same name.
