Position Title | Assistant Professor of Cinema |
Job Summary and Requirements |
The Department of Cinema seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the fall of 2019. Responsibilities include teaching all aspects of 16mm film and digital production, from conception through post-production, at introductory through advanced levels. The successful candidate will be an active filmmaker with an exceptional record of teaching both technical and artistic filmmaking skills to undergraduate students. The Department of Cinema is part of the University’s Division of Fine Arts. As such, our curriculum emphasizes artistry and conceptual sophistication as much as technical craft. The department’s curriculum also integrates film/digital production and cinema studies, and actively encourages students to draw connections between the two fields. Each course in our core film/digital production sequence encompasses the entire filmmaking process rather than focusing on a specific role or phase of motion picture production. This fosters a mindset whereby students think of their work in terms of overarching artistic vision rather than technical specialization, while allowing them to explore specific areas of motion picture production, which they might pursue further after graduation. Applicants’ specific areas of interest and expertise will be noted; however, it is the individual who can teach within the generalized filmmaking curriculum described above who is being sought. Candidates must possess an MFA, be able to teach Adobe Premiere, and have experience with 16mm or 35mm filmmaking. The ability to teach screenwriting is a plus. To be assured full consideration, candidates should visit https://employment.denison.edu and submit: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; graduate school transcript; samples of work (via links to Vimeo, etc.); and the names and contact information of three academic references, who the University will contact to submit letters of recommendation. In your cover letter, please address your potential to foster diverse perspectives among students, faculty, and the campus community. Completed application materials submitted by December 1, 2018 will receive full consideration. Review of application materials will continue until the position is filled.
