Basic Function |
Promote narrative journalism across the campus and in the community, in support of a grant-funded initiative. |
Essential Job Functions |
Denison University’s Center for Narrative Journalism and its concentration in Narrative Journalism is accepting nominations for a one-year Writing Place Fellow with potential to be renewed for a second year. This position is funded by a grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation that seeks to incorporate narrative journalism into the campus curriculum. We are seeking mid-career journalists with a wide range of publications that demonstrates an active engagement in their field. The position does not carry teaching responsibilities, but instead we seek candidates who are interested in and capable of helping professors develop course and assignments revolving around “place-based narratives” for broad audiences. To fulfill the parameters of the grant the Fellow will: 1) help individual faculty members and small faculty groups to identify teaching opportunities, develop lesson plans and assignments on an one-on-one basis and in small groups; 2) present small workshops on writing for multiple audiences; 3) assist in the classroom, at faculty request, to teach interviewing techniques, research skills, and getting to the heart of a story; 4) assist in selecting lecturers and groups to lead workshops in place-based narrative for the campus; 5) promote place-based narrative campus-wide and beyond through marketing materials and public presentations; 6) keep regular office hours; 7) assist with planning for the Between Coasts forum; and 8) give at least one public lecture or workshop. This position is critical to building competencies for faculty in narrative writing pedagogy and curricular development. The ideal candidate will have experience in investigative reporting and long-form journalism and/or narrative nonfiction, a college degree, significant experience writing longform narrative journalism that speaks to broad audiences, and some teaching experience. Minimum Qualifications |
College degree and at least 10 years of experience as journalist. |
Preferred Qualifications |
