Position Summary
Dominican University of California is seeking an individual for a Director of Budget Development and Planning position. The ideal candidate for this full-time regular position will have strong analytical, financial management, project coordination, communication and organizational skills. Under the direction of the AVP for Resources and Planning, this position will be responsible for coordinating the development of the University Budget. This position will also be responsible for analyzing revenue and expense trends, identifying Key Budget Performance Indicators and forecasting revenue and expenses.
The Budget and Financial Planning Director, along with the Budget Group, will work with all Center and Budget Managers in developing, implementing, updating, and reviewing annual budgets. The Director will assist in the development and maintenance of budget reports through the University’s various reporting mechanisms.
Responsibilities
- Take a key role in developing the annual University Operating Budget, working closely with the Budget Group and Center Managers.
- Support the development and maintenance of the Annual Budget Development Project Plan to ensure all deadlines are met, and transparent communication channels are established.
- Team with Budget Group to ensure timely and accurate reporting for use by the Budget Team, University Leadership, the Budget & Priorities Committee, and the Center Managers.
- Work with Budget Team to develop a rolling three to five year University Forecast for operating expenses and revenue.
- Work with IT to maintain the Budgeting System of Record (currently, Microsoft’s Forecaster), including all user access, reporting and roll-up functionality (Systems Administrator for Forecaster).
- Develop and review financial models and templates with appropriate university constituents; collaborate to understand and meet information needs.
- Coordinate the effort to revise the Budget each fall, as necessary, based on enrollment figures and other updated information.
- Coordinates with Human Resources and Center Managers the maintenance of personnel databases to ensure accurate budgets/projections of all personnel expenses.
- Establish controls and develop procedures to maintain and improve existing budget systems and tools. Manage and coordinate all reporting requirements and technology enhancements.
- Prepare and maintain documentation of budget development and reporting procedures and identify areas of improvement. Actively seek and implement ways to improve, streamline and automate processes.
- Provide excellent customer service to all stakeholders throughout the budget development and planning process, as well as the rest of the year.
- Assist the AVP for Academic Resources & Planning in all areas of the Planning and Budgeting function, including special projects as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in economics, finance or related field.
- Minimum seven years of experience in financial planning and analysis or comparable experience, preferably, but not necessarily at a higher education institution.
- Advanced excel skills, including financial modeling, pivot tables
- Strong project coordination skills, strong analytical skills, adept at variance analysis, forecasting revenue and expense lines, tracking and trending of key performance indicators.
- Adept at visual display of quantitative information.
- Must have knowledge of budgeting systems.
- Results oriented with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize and work well under pressure in a fast-paced and demanding environment, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines.
- Works and collaborates well within a team environment.
- Provide a service-oriented approach to clients, both internal and external.
- Flexibility and willingness to work overtime as needed.
