Description
The University Research Services and Administration (URSA) division is Georgia State University's research support resource for all grants and contracts activities, compliance and laboratory safety. The Research Integrity Department is seeking to hire a Biosafety Safety Specialist. This position will be under direct supervision and assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive biological safety program designed to facilitate campus research initiatives while protecting faculty, staff, students and visitors as well as the environment from the adverse effects of research involving biological material. This is an entry level position within the Biosafety Specialist series. This level may also be used as a training level position.
The scope of responsibilities will include these essential duties but is not limited to the following,

Assists with reviews of research protocols involving the use of biological material, laboratory operations and facilities and construction/renovation plans for all aspects of biosafety to assure appropriate health and safety controls, containment and compliance with NIH, CDC, USDA and other federal, state, local and University requirements.

Collects data by performing monthly reviews of laboratories for biosafety compliance. Assists with identifying and evaluation occupational exposures as well as hazardous conditions and recommends controls to eliminate and/or minimize employee health risks.

Responds to laboratory and research facility emergencies involving biological material, conducts incident investigations, provides incident reports, and assists with developing and implementing corrective action measures as needed. Serves as a first responder to emergency situations involving biological materials.

Assists with developing and presenting biological safety training and educational programs.

Assists with biomedical waste disposal and associated recordkeeping.

Prepares technical reports and outcome measurements as directed to include the organization, entry and analysis of information and data obtained from research protocols, laboratory and research facilities assessments, and faculty and staff surveys.

Supports and assists with efforts to ensure compliance with federal, local, state, and University policies, procedures and regulations associated with research involving biological material.

May support other safety specialist’s activities including Radiation and Chemical safety. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Public Health or related field and one year of related experience. Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
