Hobart and William Smith Colleges

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are coordinate, private, liberal arts institutions, located in Geneva, N.Y. — the heart of the Finger Lakes region. The Colleges, which have a combined enrollment of 1,800, offer a remarkably broad array of majors and minors, with a cross-disciplinary flavor intended to better inform both professional and intellectual pursuits. The Colleges are noted also for an ambitious emphasis on international study, and for their programs in community service. Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women share faculty, facilities, and curriculum, but maintain separate dean's offices, athletic programs, student governments, and traditions.

More than 500 administrative staff members serve the Colleges and the students here — from deans and directors to food service workers, from housekeeping staff to secretaries and other office personnel.

The faculty at Hobart and William Smith Colleges prides itself on teaching, scholarship, research, and community involvement. Nearly all faculty members have earned the terminal degree in their field and each faculty member teaches all his or her own classes-there are no teaching assistants substituting for the faculty member.

Faculty members are diligent in their efforts to be available to students, and most freely distribute their home telephone numbers as well as their office numbers and e-mail addresses. Students are frequent guests at professors' homes and at tables in the campus dining hall. They often spend long hours mentoring students outside the classroom — on research projects, Honors projects, and other scholarship. They arrange for visiting speakers, attend campus events, and donate time to community service activities.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges occupies a 170-acre campus that contains 47 student residences, 30 classroom and administrative buildings, a library, two dining halls, a café, two gymnasia, a Sport and Recreation Center, numerous athletic fields, a Third World Cultural Center, a chapel, infirmary, theatre, arts center, student activities center, pub, post office, bookstore, radio station, and guest house. A 108-acre biological field station is also maintained by the Colleges.

This is a small campus, so everyone knows everyone, but the perspectives, insights, and knowledge brought here by the faculty open this campus to the world!
