Assistant/Associate Dean of Students & Dean of the First Year Class
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:
The Dean of the First Year Class is responsible for supporting first year students and their transition to Lawrence University. This position is highly collaborative and will connect with multiple campus constituencies. The Dean of the First Year Class provides assistance to students with their personal development and co-curricular involvement in conjunction with progress toward that student’s educational goals and graduation requirements.
DUTIES:
- Advise, support and mentor individual students in their first year at Lawrence. This includes working with student life staff, academic advisers, faculty, and other offices to track and coordinate student progress and support.
- In collaboration with campus partners, manage the implementation of a first year program that includes the development, support, or supervision of, the following:
- Class programming and traditions to foster and enhance class identity for students in their first year at Lawrence
- Orientation week programs
- Living and learning communities specific to first year students
- Peer mentoring staff and programming for all new students
- First generation student support
- Share responsibilities with Associate Dean for Campus Life for training and selection of residential staff for first year living communities (Residence Hall Directors, Residence Life Advisors, and Peer Mentors).
- Assist the Center for Academic Success in facilitating the co-curricular program for the First Year Academic Institute (FAI), a three-week summer program just prior to the start of orientation, for the co-curricular program.
- Participate as part of the Dean on-call rotation schedule. Manage behavior follow-up including in-person meeting and documentation.
- Work with the other Deans, Student Life Staff, and relevant departments to respond to student and campus-wide challenges and crises.
- Serve as a liaison to parents to facilitate strong communication and foster appropriate support and involvement.
- Serve on a variety of divisional committees to develop policies, practices, and an overall campus environment that is student-centered and encourages student persistence and retention.
- Shared Duties with Associate Dean of Students for Campus Life:
- Manage residence hall programming budget
- Coordinate departmental long-range planning, staffing and program development
- Other duties as assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position will interact with all members of the Lawrence community in order to work collaboratively with students, their families when appropriate, staff and faculty. The Dean of the First Year Class will have regular contact with the Dean of Students Office, Student Life staff and additional offices including, but not limited to, faculty and academic advisors, financial aid, and wellness services.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel, or related field.
- Prefer 3-5 years’ experience working in student life or related field preferably on a residential liberal arts campus.
- Demonstrate interest in and actively support initiatives that promote a more inclusive Lawrence community.
- Knowledge of personal and student development theories and/or counseling background.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Excellent collaboration skills coupled with the ability to work autonomously or as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of all aspects of job responsibilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication (both oral and written), problem solving, and mediation skills as well as management and organizational abilities are required.
- Must possess an ability to work independently, exercise creativity, and pay attention to detail.
- Position requires an ability to manage multiple priorities.
