Assistant/Associate Dean of Students & Director of the Diversity and Intercultural Center
Lawrence University seeks an engaging, creative and strategic leader to serve as Assistant/Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Diversity and Intercultural Center. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the candidate of choice will bring energy, enthusiasm and vision to the Student Life division in a collective effort to support a diverse student body and further develop a welcoming, affirming and sustaining co-curricular. The successful candidate will lead and direct the university’s Diversity and Intercultural Center, managing its staff, programs, budget and affiliated organizations. Collaboration and deep partnerships with professional colleagues, students and student organizations will be essential for the success of this role.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advise, support and mentor individual students and student organizations around issues of diversity, cultural competency and learning across difference.
- Lead and direct the Diversity and Intercultural Supervise the center’s full-time program coordinator and student staff. Develop and execute effective programming and training around issues related to the center’s mission.
- Collaborate with colleagues within and outside of the student Life division on programs and issues around diversity and intercultural development.
- Enhance, develop and oversee programs and structures that support historically under-represented populations and student affinity groups.
- Serve as the institutional liaison to the Posse Foundation.
- Maintain membership on the President’s Committee on Diversity Affairs.
- Represent the Student Life division and the Diversity and Intercultural Center to internal and external constituencies.
- Serve as a member of the Dean-on-call rotation.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned. Any omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are related to the position.
QUALIFICATIONS
Qualified candidates will hold a minimum of a master’s degree, plus three to five years of relevant work experience. Familiarity with liberal arts institutions is preferred, as well of evidence of a strong commitment to mentorship and relationship building in a university or educational environment.
Ideally, the candidates will hold the following qualities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the diversity community – its needs, trends and scholarship.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Good computer literacy along with research and assessment experience.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and demonstrate good judgment and compassion.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with the faculty, staff, students and other center constituents.
- Ability to work with minimal direction, be a good problem solver, work well in teams, and effectively manage frequent changes in work assignments.
- Ability to think intentionally and strategically, be highly collaborative, with strong implementation and follow-up skills.
- Ability to represent the Center professionally and bring both professionalism and efficiency to the position and the Center.
- Experience in project management, including planning and implementation.
- Ability to implement change and develop a culture of continual improvement and growth.
- A willingness to model appropriate ways to engage in an intentional learning community.
- Maintain a strong focus on educating “the whole student.”
