Position Summary
Provide overall leadership to the Great Lakes Leadership Academy (GLLA), including the coordination of GLLA’s two signature leadership training programs: Emerging Leader Program and Leadership Advancement Program. Duties include oversight of fiscal and administrative management of GLLA, recruitment and selection of program participants, development of new programmatic products, securing program resources, including development of external grant proposals, supervision of support staff and external venders, and the creation of leadership trainings to a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders. This position will also work closely with MSU Extension’s Community Engagement team in coordinating a programmatic suite of leadership trainings in Michigan.
Characteristic Duties/Responsibilities

Coordinate the successful delivery of GLLA’s multi-session Emerging Leader and Leadership Advancement programs, including recruitment of a diverse group of training participants, interviews/selection of participants with GLLA Board, individual leadership training logistics and programmatic content, and evaluation of program success in meeting objectives and desired impact.

Supervision of support staff and external contracted vendors in support of program delivery.

Oversight for GLLA’s fiscal and administrative functions, including analyzing information/data to assess financial and programmatic effectiveness, and approval of expenditure funds in $1 million annual budget.

Develop annual GLLA budget, fiscal reports and programmatic outcomes for review by MSU Extension/College of Agriculture & Natural Resources administration and GLLA Board of Governors.

Close coordination/interface with GLLA Board of Governors in reviewing programmatic direction, resource procurement and identifying new leadership training opportunities.

Participate in network of campus resources that promotes leadership development in the agriculture and food systems, natural resource and environmental, business and manufacturing, and other sectors, affecting Michigan’s economy and quality of life.

Coordinate strategic planning and articulate a vision for the GLLA, both internally at Michigan State University and to external audiences.

Identification and pursuit of external funding opportunities, including the development of contracts and grants and growth of endowment fund to support and expand programmatic activities.

Engage with other leadership training programs regionally, nationally and internationally, to share resources and develop new delivery approaches.

Explore opportunities to expand leadership training portfolio, including opportunities with local Chambers, non-profits/NGOs, other entities, and on-line/distance learning products as appropriate.

Foster ties and encourage linkages among GLLA alumni.

Coordination with MSU Extension’s Community Engagement team in the delivery of additional leadership and conflict management training programs.

Author educational materials on topics related to leadership, including mass media articles, social media/web postings, video, and/or scholarly journal articles.

Be knowledgeable about, and implement diversity and affirmative action principles to ensure commitment to pluralism at all levels of programming.

Contribute to the professional field of leadership development through participation/leadership in national and international conferences and organizations of leadership development programs.

Actively participate in professional development opportunities.

This position requires driving as a regular part of the position.

Carrying educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

Ability to travel throughout Michigan on a regular basis, as well as occasional travel outside the state.

Develop, conduct and evaluate innovative educational programs that meet current and projected needs.

Communicate and interact with community groups to evaluate the needs of the clientele.

Serve as an information resource to clientele, partners and Extension staff.

Collaborate with MSU Extension staff to conduct and evaluate programming efforts.

In concert with the MSUE work team(s), work with federal, state and county agencies to complete needs assessment of the community and develop effective programming.

Create and promote positive public relations for MSU Extension and the Greening Michigan Institute.

Author, produce and submit regular research-based educational articles.

Develop and utilize appropriate media methods to communicate current and timely information, research results, and relevant industry updates, as well as a schedule of current and future activities.

Gather and report programming outputs and impacts, to demonstrate program effectiveness and to guide future program priorities for MSUE, the Greening Michigan Institute and the work group aligned with.

Work to ensure that community needs assessments, program development, and recruitment efforts include the engagement of Michigan’s diverse residents across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences.

Understand and implements Civil Rights policies and procedures.

Other duties or projects as assigned by the Institute Director.
Required Degree
Masters -Education, Org Dev, Community Dev, Bus
Minimum Requirements
-
Master’s degree in Education, Leadership, Organizational Development, Community Development, Development and Training Education, Instructional Design, Business, Agriculture or Natural Resources, Public Policy or related field.

3-years’ experience in Extension program delivery or demonstrated ability and skill in educational program planning, implementation and evaluation (relevant experience acquired within the last 5-years preferred).

Previous experience in educational program delivery with an understanding of adult learning approaches, leadership or leadership development.

Ability to create and carryout a project plan from research of initial concept to project completion and follow-up.

Experience with marketing/promotion of educational programs.

Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

Experience and proven ability working productively with a team.
-
Proficiency in use of technology (e.g. web research, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook for mail/calendaring, distance technology, etc.) for day-to-day work and educational program delivery, record keeping, reporting, team-based communications and overall management.

Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences/communities including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences.

Proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences to assist with program development and outreach.

Understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.

Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to 25 lbs.

Ability to travel in local and surrounding communities and occasional long distance travel are required as a regular part of this position.
