Job Description:
Bus Drivers drive full-sized passenger buses on state facility grounds or over the road. Incumbents may post manifests and other records of goods and people transported in order to document safe delivery. They are responsible for the welfare and safety of their bus and passengers while on duty.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
- Drives a full-sized passenger bus both on and off State property in order to transport people and material as required.
- May map routes, itineraries, and points of call.
- Supervises or personally performs the loading or unloading of personal property on buses.
- Posts manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and people transported.
- Keeps a written record of trips, mileages, stopovers, purchases of gasoline, oil and other materials, as well as bridge and road tolls.
- Reports apparent major malfunctions and needed repairs to appropriate supervisory or maintenance staff.
- Performs routine maintenance of passenger buses to ensure that personnel and material are moved as required.
- Washes and cleans vehicles.
- Changes tires and inflates to proper pressures.
- Replaces windshield wiper blades.
- Checks adequacy of appropriate fluid levels for radiator, battery, and crankcase. Adds fluids as appropriate.
- Checks horn, directional lights, head, tail, parking, and emergency lights for proper operation. Replaces fuses or bulbs as appropriate.
- Checks proper operation of braking system. May add fluid to master cylinder as needed.
- May operate communication equipment to monitor road, weather, and traffic conditions to insure safe and timely travel.
Requirements:
Must possess a valid CDL Class B with endorsements for Passenger and Air Brakes.
Additional minimum requirements:
- Working knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of vehicles operated.
- Working knowledge of simple automotive repair and maintenance procedures.
- Working knowledge of routes to specific locations normally visited.
- Ability to operate assigned vehicles safely and effectively under various road conditions.
- Ability to plan routes to specific locations and to properly estimate time required to reach the locations.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on vehicles operated.
- Ability to communicate orally for the purpose of exchanging information.
Appointment will be contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment testing for controlled substance use as mandated by the Federal Highway Administration Omnibus Transportation Act of 1991 (OTETA). Employment cannot commence until notification for successful completion of this pre-employment testing is received. Please note that in addition to the initial testing required by OTETA, the Act further requires that the University conduct pre-assignment (promotion), reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, follow-up and return to duty drug and alcohol testing throughout the period of employment.
