Description:
The Clemson University College of Education seeks a dedicated academic leader to fill the Department Chair position with experience that would merit tenure and the level of senior Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning (T&L). This position is primarily responsible for providing leadership and support to ensure the quality of the department’s teaching, scholarship, public service, undergraduate and graduate programs. The nine-month appointment is for a 3-year term and begins August, 2019.
Consistent with Clemson University’s public, land grant mission, the College of Education is especially focused on serving underperforming schools as well as members of underrepresented, diverse, and marginalized populations in South Carolina. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in leading and engaging a progressive faculty committed to fulfilling this mission through research, teaching and public service. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities:
- Ensure implementation of departmental policies and procedures involving peer evaluations; recommend faculty appointments, reappointments, tenure, promotion, termination, and dismissal
- Recruit and retain faculty, staff, and students; negotiate with prospective faculty
- Support the professional growth of non-tenure and tenure-track faculty, staff members and part/full-time doctoral students
- Monitor departmental implementation of Affirmative Action policies and procedures
- Annually evaluate each member of the department’s faculty and participate in the evaluation of staff
- Develop budgets in concert with the college dean and allocate such funds for instruction and other purposes
- Hear informal faculty grievances and cooperate in formal grievance procedures
- Supervise the department’s program of instruction, including curriculum, scheduling, faculty workload, and departmental research and public service
- Ensure that students’ rights are preserved; supervise the advising of departmental majors and graduate students
- Monitor student evaluation of instruction, courses, and programs
- Provide leadership in student recruitment, student advising, and student placement
- Coordinate and supervise summer school programs and orientations
- Make recommendations concerning applications for professional travel and sabbatical leave
- Arrange meetings of the departmental faculty; meet with the departmental advisory committee and appropriate constituent and advisory groups for the disciplines
- Involve faculty, staff and external stakeholders in a visioning and strategic planning process
- Work closely with the Dean and Associate Deans of the College of Education; collaborate with Department Chairs of EOLD and EHD
- Represent the Department on the Dean’s Executive Committee, Organization of Associate Deans and Chairs Committee
- Serve as a liaison between the department and Executive Director of the Office of Field and Clinical Partnerships and Outreach
- Serve as a liaison between the department and the Office of Accreditation and Assessment
- Maintain material pertaining to accreditation and certification and establish accreditation, assessment and ad hoc departmental committees as needed
- Engage in teaching, research, publication, external funding, and other scholarly activities
- Enhance and support the Department’s vision
- Carry out other duties as assigned by the dean

Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in education or related field
- Experience and scholarship that would merit the status of senior Associate or Full Professor
- Experience with undergraduate and graduate programs in teacher education
- Experience in a leadership role with evidence of increasing responsibility and success in program administration
- Experience with budgeting processes, course assignments and registration
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Ability to establish and maintain good rapport with faculty, staff, and school/community partners in the academic and professional environment
- Ability to teach an undergraduate or graduate course in one of the Department’s program areas.

- Potential to secure externally funded grants

- Experience mentoring both new and developing faculty members
- Experience building national, state and regional educational partnerships
- Experience participating in grant-funded research
- Experience marketing academic programming that leads to generating revenue
- Experience mentoring graduate students to degree completion

This is a nine-month position. Appointment is for a 3-year term, eligible for renewal. The Chair will receive a 10% administrative stipend for the academic year and a 20% administrative summer stipend. Teaching load is 1/1.
