About the Position
|

The Enrollment Services Department at San José State University supports the academic mission of the University and collaboratively works with the campus community to enhance student success. The International Admissions Evaluator performs various functions under limited supervision of the Associate Director, Undergraduate & Graduate Admissions, works independently to perform general tasks and assignments related to admissions, evaluations, and transfer credit with emphasis on admission verification and processing. This position is responsible for advising and counseling all prospective applicants, new, and continuing international students attempting to complete Title 5, CSU and University undergraduate admissions requirements. The position conducts international undergraduate admission evaluation and assessment. The position actively collaborates with other university staff involved in various aspects of admissions and records processing, to ensure that related processes are completed in a timely manner. The objective in all interactions is to provide customer service and provide information regarding policies and procedures, to suggest actions that will resolve issues, and to establish cordial and collegial relationships with those who contact the Office of Admissions and Outreach.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: - Applies CSU policies and procedures as expressed in federal, state, and applicable Chancellor's Office executive orders as well as SJSU's academic policies and procedures to individual admission evaluation situations. - Follows business processes for each application cycle, and relays appropriate feedback on processes to meet demands and specified timelines, including, but not limited to the admission application evaluation processing for undergraduates. - Assesses international applicants' documents and transcripts to determine admission eligibility for both Freshmen & Transfer applicants. - Works in collaboration with other campus units including International Programs and Services and the SEVIS Coordinator to ensure that applicants are processed accurately and in a timely manner. - Serve as DSO (designated school official) regarding SEVIS processes. - Interpret and explain policies to students and their families as well as provide clarification on policies and procedures to other SJSU offices and representatives from other institutions (such as high school counselors and community college counselors) who have questions. |

Minimum Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related and three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses. |

Preferred Qualifications

- A Bachelor's degree from a four-year, accredited college or university in one of the behavioral
sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. - 3 years of professional work experience in a higher education environment in areas of operations such as records, graduation, admissions, advising in a large size institution. - Experience working with PeopleSoft and/or comparable customer service based technology systems. - Experience in SJSU/CSU admissions or records policies. - Excellent written communication skills. - Experience demonstrating commitment to customer service and higher education. |

- Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and
procedures, functions and programs of the campus, as well as laws governing student rights. - Thorough knowledge of San Jose State University admissions and records policies. - Knowledge of methods, procedures, practices and activities of international admissions, including ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations. - Ability to interact with a variety of internal partners from the College of International and Extended Studies, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Office of the President, communicating effectively and professionally. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Excellent customer service and public relations skills. - Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior and general counseling techniques. - Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-gendered, and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly. - Knowledge of technology and software applications such as: word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools. - Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data. - Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment. - Ability to examine and analyze complex records and detailed information for compliance with CSU requirements for both domestic and international student applicants. - Knowledge of the academic year calendar and processing cycles that affect the workflow of the Office of Admissions and Outreach (i.e., International admission processing) and the Enrollment Services department. - Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive communications with students, parents, staff, faculty and external agencies. - Knowledge of FERPA and data security best practices. - Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required. - Ability to pass the University's defensive driving course to operate university carts or vehicles. |
