Towson University

Founded in 1866, Towson University is recognized among the nation's best regional public universities, offering more than 100 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs in the liberal arts and sciences, and applied professional fields.



Located in suburban Towson, eight miles north of Baltimore, our beautifully landscaped, 328-acre setting offers a pleasant environment for study and a diverse campus life, as well as easy access to a wealth of university and community resources. Towson University's educational experience branches out to off-campus locations throughout Maryland, including a number of online options.



With more than 21,000 students, Towson University is the second-largest public university in Maryland. As a metropolitan university, Towson combines research-based learning with practical application. Our many interdisciplinary partnerships with public and private organizations throughout Maryland provide opportunities for research, internships and jobs. Towson University is a founding member of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU).

 

Towson University 2016: Building Within - Reaching Out outlines the vision for the university's future, and is the second university strategic plan. Towson University 2010: Mapping the Future was successfully completed in spring 2010.

Building Within - Reaching Out conveys Towson's goal to continue to strengthen the Towson University experience, and fulfills the university's metropolitan mission to serve and meet the needs of the state of Maryland and region. Towson University 2016 was created to take Towson University to its next phase of development and build upon the success and accomplishments of the previous strategic plan.

Developed with involvement from internal and external focus groups, the 2016 plan is built upon 16 Guiding Principles with a mission statement and identifies five themes that will guide Towson's advancement.

The town of Towson, with a population of approximately 52,000 residents, is a “college town” within walking distance of Towson University’s campus. Towson has tree-lined streets, shops, restaurants, movies, bookstores, a branch of the county library, live music venues, and a friendly and safe atmosphere. Established in 1750, it’s also the seat of Baltimore County government.

Towson University’s beautiful wooded 328-acre campus is also a great community resource for people who live in the surrounding neighborhoods of Rodgers Forge, West Towson, Southland Hills, Ruxton, Riderwood, Knollwood-Donneybrook and Burkleigh Square.

From concerts and lectures to Division I college sports, Towson offers many cultural, educational and athletics programs and events that are open to the public. TU’s hilly landscape is also a great recreational resource for joggers and cyclists. Fitness and wellness resources on campus include the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, the Wellness Center’s LIFEWORx program with St. Joseph Medical Center, swim programs for children and adults at Burdick Pool, and the Children’s Dance Division.
