Job Description Summary
The Fort Lee Education Center located in Fort Lee, Virginia is seeking candidates for the Student/Academic Advisor position. The Student/Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for advising students of their academic progress.
Job Description
Job Duties:
- Assists new and returning students with course selection.
- Registers students in colleague system through multi-screen process.
- Maintains and updates student files, including, but not limited to:
- Tracks graduation application and ensures all requirements have been met for degree conferral.
- Compiles or assists with student paperwork (Program Update Requests, graduation applications, clearance, etc.).
- Tracks student course loads.
- Mediates minor classroom conflict and miscommunication.
- Track student overloads.
- Participate in networking events.
- Follow up on student retention efforts including but not limited to students not registered for a particular term, students failing at midterm and major focused efforts.
- Work with at risk students to improve academic performance.
- Encourages students to register for correlating courses needed for their major.
- Processes sanctions and works with at risk students to improve their academic performance.
- Assist with community events revolving around chamber and state college schedule.
- Represent the university/center at recruiting events, career days and benefit fairs when necessary.
- Manages mass messaging system to remind students to get registered.
- Be a vital and contributing team member
- Travel to satellite offices, weekend and evening work may be required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Tampa Education Center Assistant Director or Tampa Area Director.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or University (required), Master’s degree preferred.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Able to develop and maintain effective and productive relationships.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Knowledge of higher education.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service.
Skills:
- Skilled in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Skilled in understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
- Skilled in speaking effectively to others to convey information.
- Skilled in communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
- Skilled in complex problem solving including reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Skilled in adjusting actions in relation to others' actions.
- Skilled in working with Microsoft Office Suite such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Skilled in Student Information Systems such as Colleague and SalesForce.
Abilities:
- Ability to work in a team environment, plan and organize work, prioritize work and manage time.
- Must be US Citizen if required to represent the University on a military installation.
