DESCRIPTION: Under the general supervision and direction of the Director, Student Support Services, Counseling and Special Services Division, the primary responsibility of this position is to provide instruction, technical assistance, training and resource materials to students with disabilities, faculty and staff throughout the District.
- Responsibilities and Duties
-
Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Provide one-on-one and/or group training and support for faculty, staff and students in the areas of access technology, alternate media, distance education, electronic information and adaptive accommodations for students with physical and hidden disabilities.
2. Instruct courses in Assistive Technology/Computer Adaptive Technology and Learning Skills in accordance with credit course outlines approved by the Board of Trustees.
3. Maintain expertise in current teaching methods, discipline knowledge, and discipline specific technologies.
4. Assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling services and/or tutorial assistance. Track student learning outcomes and maintain records of student learning outcomes.
5. Develop and implement access technology on campus and assess the future needs of Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS).
6. Assess and anticipate computer needs with the production and design of information in alternate formats for Disability Support Programs and Services.
7. Collaborate with IT to develop an access technology plan that includes installing, configuring and troubleshooting various assistive computer technologies.
8. Research advancement of new access technologies that may be suitable for implementation within the District, as it applies to the needs of students with disabilities.
9. Communicate and interface with the District computer support team, instructional computer lab coordinators, faculty, staff, Librarian staff and students regarding digital access to campus on-line courses, instructional materials, and student support services. 10. Develop and implement coursework, materials and processes that meet brailling, captioning and other alternate media and assistive computer technologies.
11. Research and advise students with disabilities about materials allowing access of electronic information, such as closed/open captioning, kiosks, teleconferencing, audio description, or phone services.
12. Instruct campus departments, divisions and/or administrative units to identify and incorporate access needs into their comprehensive planning process and course curriculum.
13. Demonstrate and operate adaptive technologies and provide instructional/technical support to staff in the Adaptive Technology Classrooms and DSPS Computer Lab, and any other areas of the District's campuses.
14. Assist the Director in the preparation of reports, budget, audit information and other required data.
15. Advise and assist students in achieving stated District objectives.
16. Participate in various departmental, divisional and campus-wide activities as stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement and as designated by the shared governance process.
17. Assist in the marketing and promotion of the program by participating in college-sponsored events and by visiting local businesses and schools.
18. Attend state and local job-related workshops, seminars and classes to maintain knowledge of the latest access technology.
19. Participate on college committees/organizational units to advise on technology access. 20. Perform other necessary duties which assure the smooth functioning of the Division such as attendance at Division meetings, committee work and other related responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Master's, or equivalent foreign degree, in the category of disability, special education, education, psychology, educational psychology, rehabilitation counseling, engineering or technology; or assistive technology/computer adaptive technology
AND Fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of disability including assistive technology/computer adaptive technology, or rehabilitation engineering • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS • Minimum of two years of full-time experience or the equivalent within the last five years of working with individuals with disabilities at the middle school, high school, or college level, identifying assistive technology to meet their access and/or learning needs, and providing instruction in its use
• Demonstrated commitment to student learning and demonstrated commitment to promoting the success of all students in an open-access learning environment.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic backgrounds, cultures, preparation, learning styles and/or disabilities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of guidelines, regulations and/or policies for individuals with disabilities (ADA/AA, Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act) alternate media, distance education and electronic information including the Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards, and the Assistive Technology Act of 1998.
• Demonstrated experience of current computer, networking, web based and assistive technologies.
• Demonstrated course curriculum/syllabus development/SLO-SLOA'S in planning and preparation of instruction for students and staff.
• Demonstrated interest and exemplary teaching experience with designing and developing training materials for delivery in multiple formats.
• Demonstrated ability to assist students who possess a broad range of skills, interests and academic/vocational objectives.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain effective communications and working relationships among adaptive technology users, staff and faculty.
• Demonstrated excellence in preparation and knowledge in the creation and use of alternate media formats. • Expertise in the use of assistive computer technologies, information technology and software for students who have disabilities. • Willingness to work non-traditional hours to meet the needs of our diverse student population.
