About the Position
|

Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts and receiving work lead direction from the Student Success Center Director, the incumbent will work independently and with a team of advisors under general supervision to provide academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in all majors in the College of Humanities and the Arts. The person in this position advises students on academic requirements and procedures, provides support for students facing a variety of institutional and personal problems, and connects students to appropriate resources on campus. Working with the Success Center team and SASS, the advisor participates in assessment processes, provides professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students, and supports University initiatives on retention, persistence, and graduation.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Provide General Education and support in the major advising services consistent with CSU, SJSU, Academic Advising and Retention Services (AARS) and College of Humanities and the Arts (H&A) policies and procedures. Advising services include, but are not limited to, advising in general education; academic and educational planning; preparation and support in the major; remedial and probation/disqualification advising; and communication with faculty, staff, and students about all of these issues. Services may also include management of an assigned caseload of students and review of the work of assigned Peer Academic Advisor(s). -Deliver workshops and individual advising on effective study skills; academic standing in the major, including academic probation and disqualification; and other topics related to student success. -Advise academic programs and department chairs in the areas of general education, course articulation, major roadmaps, and transcripts. Collaborate with faculty, staff, and peer advisors to enhance academic services in major programs. -Provide professional academic advisor support for University-wide events and initiatives, including but not limited to orientation, registration, and recruitment events on campus and at area community colleges. -Interface with a variety of campus offices to determine success in achieving established outcomes. Participate in college-level and university-wide advising assessment projects and uses results to enhance services. |

Education and Experience
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master's degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

-Advising experience in the humanities and/or the arts.
-Experience supervising student staff. -Experience with academic/general education requirements, admissions and registration processes, and resources available to students. -Experience establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment. |

-Ability to reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data. -Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required. -Ability to use software applications: Google docs/drive, word processing and spreadsheets, and database management. -Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, SJSU policies, procedures, and requirement related to student success. -Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts. -Ability to manage time in order to be most available to clients while maintaining appropriate response time for phone and email messages. -Excellent oral and written communication skills. -Ability to analyze complex situations and adopt effective courses of action. -Ability to plan and conduct workshops, assist with organization of special events or activities, and make effective presentations before groups. -Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports. |
