About the Position
|

The Academic Advisor serves as liaison to an academic college or particular student group and participates in appropriate committees and work groups as assigned. This particular position will be assigned to work with a group of advisors focused on reducing the equity gap in retention and graduation rates for under-represented minority groups and with students on university level academic probation.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Provide retention & advising services consistent with CSU, SJSU, UGS and Academic Advising and Retention Services policies and procedures to ensure student success. -Advising services include general education, academic and educational planning, Undeclared advising, remedial, & probation/disqualification. Serve as advisor with focus on Under-represented minority students to assist in reducing gap in retention and graduation rates. -Develop & maintain workshops for specific subgroups of students, coordinate university level initiative with representatives from College Success Centers. -Provide lead for specified subgroup (Undeclared-PreNursing or other meta-major). -Coordinate/run meetings of group across colleges addressing university level initiative. Particular focus will be on students from under-represented minority groups where equity gaps are evident in retention and graduation rates and on students on university level academic probation. -Conduct Student Development seminars and workshops as an essential feature of Academic Advising and Retention Services plan, priorities, goals and objectives to maximize efficient service delivery. -Assist in the planning, development & implementation of retention related programs, with special focus on transition programming related to progress toward and completion of the degree. |

Education and Experience
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related and three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's degree
-3 years academic advising experience in postsecondary education. -Demonstrated experience supporting students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. -Demonstrated experience in retention planning and/or supporting students experiencing academic difficulty. -Demonstrated familiarity with higher education academic policies and procedures. |

-Strong oral and written communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills.
-Ability to interpret and convey CSU, SJSU, UGS, Student and Faculty Success and Academic Advising and Retention Services policies and procedures to support student success. -Thorough knowledge of or the ability to quickly acquire and apply knowledge of Title V of the California State Education Code, EOP Executive Orders, California State University Executive Orders, San Jose State University and Equal Opportunity Program admissions policies and procedures. -Ability to learn non-resident tuition policies including AB540; ability to acquire and apply knowledge of disability resources and admissions requirements. -Ability to analyze and evaluate applications and transcripts and acquire knowledge of Transfer Admissions Agreements. -Demonstrated ability to interact with potential students, parents, high school and community college staff on a one-on-one basis and in-group settings. -Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on the data. -Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school and community college staff individually and in group settings. -Working knowledge of technology and software applications such as: word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools. -May be required to travel to other geographic locations and work on some evening and weekend hours. -Must possess a valid California Driver's license at the time of hire, for the operation of any state vehicle required to perform the essential functions of the job. Must be able to complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses. |
