About the Position
|

Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences and receiving work lead direction from the Faculty Director, the incumbent will work independently and with a team of advisors under general supervision to provide academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in all majors in the College. The person in this position advises students on academic requirements and procedures, provides support for students facing a variety of moderately complex institutional and personal problems, connects students to appropriate resources on campus to foster student success, and advocates the needs of individual students and groups of students. Working with the Center team, the advisor participates in assessment processes, provides professional advising support for recruiting and orienting new students, and supports College and University initiatives on retention, persistence, and graduation.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: - Provide advising services consistent with CSU, SJSU, and College of Social Sciences policies and procedures. - Advise students individually and in groups on topics, such as general education requirements, filing petitions, academic and educational planning, graduation procedures, remediation, and academic probation and disqualification. - Aid students in improving students' successful educational strategies such as effective study habits, time management skills, and supportive educational environment development. - Aid students in accessing resources and services to help with addressing issues and enhancing students' likelihood of success. - Maintain open channels of communication with the College advisors, faculty, staff, peer advisors, and student services staff to facilitate the success of the Center and our students. - Use online tools to monitor student progress and to collect and analyze data related to student success. - Services may also include management of an assigned caseload of students |

Education and Experience
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master's degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

- Master's degree in a related field; Higher Ed advising experience
- Experience providing academic advising to college students - Experience with university policies, practices, and activities of academic advising and student support services - Experience conducting workshops, presentations and/or other educational experience to groups - Experience with office software applications (e.g. work processing, spreadsheet software etc.) |

- Knowledge of university policies and major, GE, university, and system requirements for
graduation. - Knowledge of advising related methods, procedures and practices. - Knowledge and sensitivity to issues faced by SJSU students generally, and College of Social Sciences majors specifically. - Knowledge of student services programs outside the College of Social Sciences. - Knowledge of related software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, CMS, etc.). - A strong command of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling. - Strong oral and written communication skills. - Problem solving and conflict resolution skills. - Ability to effectively advise students individually and in groups on moderately complex student related matters. - Ability to encourage students to seek out and learn from experiences with different forms of diversity. - Ability to manage time in order to be most available to clients while maintaining appropriate response time for phone and email messages. - Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees, students and external agencies. - Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. - Ability to plan and conduct workshops, assist with organization of special events or activities, and make effective presentations before groups. - Ability to commit to professional training as a means to enhance performance initiatives and teamwork communication. - Excellent customer service and public relation skills. |
