About the Position
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising and Retention Services (AARS), the Academic Advisor provides a wide range of academic advising and retention services for undergraduate students attempting to complete Title 5, California State University (CSU), and San José State University (SJSU) requirements relating to baccalaureate degree requirements. Working independently, the Academic Advisor develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses academic support and other retention services and programs in accordance with University policies to insure student success through graduation. The Academic Advisor serves as liaison to the an academic College or student group (i.e., Undeclared) and appropriate committees and work groups as assigned.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Provide retention & advising services consistent with CSU, SJSU, UGS and Academic Advising and Retention Services policies and procedures to ensure student success. -Advising services include general education, academic and educational planning, Undeclared advising, remedial, & probation/disqualification. -Conduct Student Development seminars and workshops as an essential feature of Academic Advising and Retention Services plan, priorities, goals and objectives to maximize efficient service delivery. -Assist in the planning, development & implementation of retention related programs, with special focus on transition programming related to progress toward and completion of the degree. -Interface with a variety of campus offices through the establishment of liaison connections and collaboration to provide maximum assistance to students and to determine success in achieving established outcomes, assessing appropriateness of units' measurements, goals, and objectives. |

Minimum Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's degree
-2 years academic advising experience in postsecondary education. -Demonstrated familiarity with higher education academic policies and procedures. -Demonstrated experience facilitating workshops. -Strong written communication skills. |

|

-Ability to interpret and convey CSU, SJSU, UGS, Student Academic Success Services and Academic Advising and Retention Services policies and procedures to ensure student success.
-Thorough knowledge of or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of Title V of the California State Education Code, EOP Executive Orders, California State University Executive Orders, San Jose State University and Equal Opportunity Program admissions policies and procedures. -Ability to analyze and evaluate applications and transcripts and acquire knowledge of Transfer Admissions Agreements. General knowledge of counseling techniques. -Ability to formulate and recommend solutions to unusual situations and problems using good judgment, a high degree of initiative and creativity. -Demonstrated ability to interact with potential students, parents, high school and community college staff on a one-on-one basis and in-group settings. -Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on the data. -Ability to use professional judgment to review and assess admissions requirements and documents. -Ability to advise potential students, parents, high school and community college staff individually and in group settings. -Working knowledge of technology and software applications such as: word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools. -Ability to plan and execute multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects. -May be required to travel to other geographic locations and work on some evening and weekend hours. -Must possess a valid California Driver's license at the time of hire, for the operation of any state vehicle required to perform the essential functions of the job. Must be able to complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses |
