About the Position
|

Working independently under limited supervision, the Assistant Director assists the director in leading, coordinating, implementing, and assessing unit activities and advising services and programs to ensure success of CHAHS students through graduation. The Assistant Director also provides direct advising and provides direct supervision of SSP III staff and tutors.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Provide accurate, timely, and consistent academic advising to students pursuing majors and/or minors in CHAHS in the areas of general education, course planning, academic planning, change of major, remediation, and probation/disqualification in accordance with CSU, SJSU, and UGS policies using individual, group, and/or electronic means. -Evaluate and recommend a course of action for students in difficult academic situations where guidelines do not exist or are not applicable. -Maintain currency in institutional information including admissions requirements, programs, course changes, deadlines, costs, college-wide initiatives and requirements, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates. -Collaborate with SSC Director to develop and implement data collection and tracking strategies to evaluate effectiveness and quality of programs; implement program changes based on analysis of data. -Organize and coordinate hiring, training, and supervision of CHAHS SSC tutors and student assistants. -Develop written materials and make presentations on topics such as academic planning, General Education requirements, CHAHS SSC services, time management, and study skills. -Coordinate and oversee CHAHS SSC participation in transfer and frosh orientation sessions. |

Education and Experience

||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related and four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling. |

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's degree in an academic advising-related field.
-Minimum of four years of experience in student advising/student success in higher education. -Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in program development related to student success. -Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in program assessment and evaluation related to student success. -Minimum of a master's degree in a field directly related to student success (e.g., education counseling). -Minimum of two years of supervisory experience in the area of student success in higher education. |

-Knowledge of, sensitivity to, and experience in working with ethnically and culturally diverse student populations as well as low-income and first generation college students.
-Excellent written and oral communication skills. -Excellent customer service and public relations skills. -Ability to manage stress, be flexible, and prioritize work tasks. -Ability to coordinate and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations. -Ability to advise students individually and in groups on various complex matters. -Ability to train and supervise professional staff. -Experience organizing and conducting workshops and making effective presentations to groups. -Experience collecting and evaluating data to draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. |
