About the Position
|

Reporting to and receiving limited supervision from the Associate Director of the Accessible Education Center (AEC), the Autism Services Counselor/Coordinator (ASC) works independently to deliver educational approaches and skills for SJSU AS population. The ASC provides programmatic oversight and support; develops programs; disability management; social interactions, time management, self-governing abilities, and confidential counseling to AS students; participates in Case Management meetings; advocates on behalf of the University; acts as a resource to the greater campus and community at large.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Provides one-on-one counseling and advisement for the retention of AS students. -Participates in Case Management and prescribes accommodations to AS students. -Provides compensatory skills designed to support AS students in social interactions, time management, personal development skills (i.e fine tune self-governing abilities), and study strategies. -Provides students with a thorough understanding of AEC resources and policies; orients students towards his or her role as self-advocate for services. -Acts as liaison to the faculty for students with disabilities and works closely with faculty and department chairs to ensure the effective delivery of these services. -Acts as a liaison to the faculty, department chairs, Dean, and administration for students via written and oral communication for curriculum related support, advocacy, etc. -Acts as a liaison to on and off-campus programs that provide ASD related support to build community partnership and ensure accessibility for students with disabilities in those programs. -Articulates University, State, and Federal policies and regulations to faculty and staff. -Acts as a resource for faculty and mediates between faculty and students. -Assists AEC Counselors in providing support to students with various disabilities. -Develop, implement, and maintain process and procedures for ASD Student Group Support, promoting independence and autonomy through social interactions, coaching and role-play. -Coordinates the delivery of services; develops and implements hiring services, provides training to Educational assistants working on behalf of the AEC to support the AS program. -Participates in the AEC strategic planning process, committees and events as well as those of the Division of Student Affairs and the campus at large. Participates in the Learning Outcomes process. Compiles data and develops reports on all aspects of support services area, including division and system wide reporting for the Chancellor's office. -Monitor on-going progress and conducts pre and post assessment of ASD Group measuring impact of services and programs provided. |

Education and Experience
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related and four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems.
A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling. |

Preferred Qualifications

-A master's degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Student Development, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a directly related field.
-Autism Certification or extensive formal education in autism. -Pre-board Certified Behavior Analyst or training in behavior modification -A master's degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Student Development, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience -Two years of progressively responsible professional experience working with adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, and interpreting and analyzing diverse and complex disability-related information in order to make appropriate access/accommodations recommendations. |

-Knowledge of program development and major campus program planning; working knowledge of other student services programs.
-Knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field. -Knowledge of state and Federal rules and regulations applicable to accommodations for individuals with disabilities. -Ability to articulate developmental needs of students and to design programs to meet those needs. -Ability to create programs that are responsive to a diverse and multicultural environment. -Ability to evaluate orientation programs and design appropriate program responses. -Knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques. -Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective course of action. -Ability to carry out a variety of complex assignments without detailed instructions. -Strong oral and written communication skills. -Knowledge of University methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling. -Ability to deal with sensitive and challenging administrative and interpersonal issues in a positive, proactive manner. -Ability to develop and train end users (student with disabilities and faculty) on appropriate adaptive technology and alternative media. -Ability for clear, cogent written and oral communication. -Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects. -Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies. -Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions. -Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures. -Excellent customer service and public relations skills. |
