About the Position
|

Reporting to the Chair of Chemistry, and receiving work direction from the IST III Work Lead, the incumbent works independently under limited supervision to achieve specified outcomes. The incumbent provides comprehensive instructional support service, which involves the preparation, maintenance, and quality control of chemicals, chemical reagents, and materials for the Departments Chemistry courses with emphasis on the Chemistry 30 laboratory program.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Working with the faculty, assists in the development of laboratory experiments by acting as a resource in chemical or material utilization. -Using precision analytical glassware, various pH and water purification systems, will perform routine chemical procedures, such as titrations, standardization of acids and bases, and pH specific buffer reagents. -Oversee and utilize the operation of both glassware washers, the pipette washer, and drying ovens in the Main Service Center to support the various Chemistry teaching laboratory courses. -Train and supervise the Student Assistants to facilitate the operation of the Main Chemistry Service Center. -Maintain a database every semester for each Duncan Hall Chemistry laboratory student, who receives a check-out pad, from the Main Chemistry Service Center. -Retain and organize all check-out and return slips from these students for equipment, glassware, consumable items, and other materials. -Record items for each student which were lost, broken, damaged, and/or consumed, and determine a replacement cost. -Utilize the University CMS PeopleSoft computer data system to apply academic holds on these specific students, who must reimburse the Department for their replacement cost amount. |

Minimum Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned. A combination of education
and experience will be considered. |

Preferred Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
-Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, or a related science, from an Accredited University.
-Expereince preparing chemical reagents at specific concentrations, volumes, and pH, from purchased raw chemical materials from vendors. -Experience using basic scientific instrumentation/equipment such as pH and voltmeters, top loading and analytical balances (both analog and digital), drying ovens, and glassware washers. -Experience preparing standardized chemical reagents, especially acids and bases using primary standards. -Experience providing chemical lab support in a teaching and/or research environment. -Experience repairing Pyrex glassware, using glass cutting machinery and high temperature flame. |

-Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports.
-Working knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management. -Excellent written and oral communication skills. -Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills. -Ability to segregate chemicals and hazardous chemical waste into specific hazard classes. -Thorough knowledge of chemical compatibility. -Familiarity with use of basic scientific equipment, and techniques, for qualitative chemical analysis. -Skills to produce uniformly standardized solutions, within specific quality levels. -Ability to properly store, handle, and dispose, of hazardous chemical waste. -Familiarity with apparatus, equipment, and instrumentation, utilized in university level chemistry laboratories. -Knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum, and their characteristics. -Ability to operate basic scientific equipment such as: Voltmeters, pH Meters, Digital/Analog Balances, and Water Purification Systems. -Ability to complete safety training for First Responders Awareness level (FRA), offered by the College of Science Safety Officers. |
