About the Position
|

Reporting to, and receiving work lead direction from, the Chair of the Department of Meteorology, the Equipment Technician II (Electronic) works independently to perform skilled repair, maintenance, calibration, and modification of all types of electric and electromechanical equipment with a primary focus being on a wide and growing suite of meteorological instrumentation. Emphasis is on both instruments in the teaching laboratories and those use in relation to research. Some instruments are vehicle-mounted and are used in the field. This may include the design, fabrication, and construction of unique equipment, teaching aids and technical apparatus for use in the laboratory or classroom related to research or instructional support or any other specific need for the department of Meteorology and the College of
Science. Incumbent will work with the deans, department chairs, faculty and staff to assess the service needs of the departments and programs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Perform equipment design, fabrication, repair, maintenance, or installation of sophisticated, specialized instrumentation for both teaching and research programs. -Diagnose and repair problems with a wide range of scientific measurement instruments (including radar and lidar) which may be located in offices/laboratories, on the building's rooftop observatory, in the field (within a range of 10-20 miles), and vehicle-mounted. -Participate in installation of instruments to fixed and mobile platforms. (e.g., installing new instruments on building roof, in the field, and on vehicles). -Conduct routine maintenance of instrumentation on the building's rooftop observatory (radar, lidar, cameras, weather stations, air quality instruments), including periodic instrument calibration. -Trouble-shoot, repair and maintain instruments including those with hardware and software interfaces. -Maintain and repair data communications between instruments, dataloggers, and campus web sites. -Interface with College IT group to ensure delivery of data to online pages. -Participate in occasional field deployments to assist in scientific field campaigns. -Works directly with and acts a resource to faculty, students, and staff in developing electronic equipment capability for research and instruction. -Assists in the designs and development of specialized equipment for faculty and student research and instruction from oral instructions, technical drawings or equipment specifications. -Assists with the designs, development, maintenance, and fabrication of electric and electromechanical equipment for the College of Science. -Assist in planning modifications to existing systems and draw new or revised diagrams; calibrate, test, adjust, and repair complex or unique equipment. -Adapts used or donated specialized and unique equipment for one of a kind use for the departments in the College of Science. -Maintains, modifies and performs highly skilled repairs for unique and specialized equipment by diagnosing, testing, and analyzing electrical and mechanical system functions. -Develops methods and technique for analyzing the location and extent of malfunctioning of equipment. -Performs preventative maintenance, repair and upgrading of existing College of Science equipment. -Order and maintain an inventory of spare components for all the electronic instruments, test equipment, and electronic teaching aids. -Updates Material Safety Data sheets (MSDS) for safety compliance. -Order and maintain an inventory of spare components for all the electronic instruments, test equipment, and electronic teaching aids. -Work with vendors to obtain quotes and information about specific instrumentation. -Assumes responsibility to serve as liaison with FD&O, in the absence of CoS Facilities Coordinator. -Performs other duties as assigned. |

Minimum Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to two years of journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair, and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned such as mechanical, electromechanical, electronics or in the specialized category including construction and fabrication and some precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials or equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related experience in the type of equipment to which assigned as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience or equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned, completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair for one year of the required experience. A Federal
Communications Commission license is required for some positions. |

Preferred Qualifications

-BS in a field in which electronic instrumentation is widely used (e.g., Physics, Engineering, Meteorology or a related field), or comparable military experience.
-Experience in calibration, testing and repair of such electronic equipment. and/or -Experience in calibration, testing and repair of Air Quality equipment. and/or -Experience working with radar and/or lidar remote sensing systems |

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Knowledge of methods and procedures of electric and electromechanical equipment.
-Knowledge of workings of standard electronic equipment used in various scientific enterprises. -Knowledge of electrical diagnostic equipment with high and low voltage shock hazards. -Knowledge of equipment repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul. -Ability to understand the basic concepts of physics and mathematics, and knowledge and experience in digital electronics. -Ability to analyze and troubleshoot equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed. -Ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment. -Ability to install, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment. -Thorough knowledge of all safety methods, procedures and practices. -Working knowledge of basic software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) and ability to work with instrument-specific software applications -Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment. -Ability to handle multiple priorities, organize and plan work and projects. -Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies. -Ability to quickly learn and apply a variety of state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures. -Strong oral communications skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills. |
