About the Position
|

Reporting to the Director of the Engineering Student Success Center (ESSC), the Guided Pathways Academic Advisor II will work under general supervision to provide academic advising to students in the College of Engineering. The position also engages in assessment of advising services and provides support for university-wide events. The incumbent will plan, recommend improvements, collaborate with faculty major advisors, and act as a spokesperson for the ESSC is required for the job. There will be some specialization in advising areas among the ESSC advising team members. This position will perform guided pathways advising for new freshmen and/or transfer students in the college.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Provide academic advising to student that facilitates student success, persistence, and degree completion in a timely manner. -Provide guided pathways advising for the lower division plan of study for freshmen, and/or the steps to graduation for transfer students. Collaborate with major advisors in departments and the appropriate curriculum and assessment committees. Develop integration with instruction, worksheets, and other support materials as necessary. Hold workshops, appointments, and other dissemination mechanisms as necessary. -Apply understanding of college credit, including AP and other credit by examination, transfer articulation from CA community colleges, and substitution/equivalency procedures and policies to student advising; advocate for corrections to student records when needed. -Guide students through critical thinking process to understand academic standards and policies for degree completion. This may include, but is not exclusive to: degree requirements, major/minor/certificate/credential/general education requirements, roadmaps to graduation, graduation applications, international student issues, student concerns, course registration. -Participate in collaborations with Community Colleges and High Schools when appropriate. -Engage in assessment processes to: conduct assessment of college-level academic advising services and use results to enhance services; participate in university-wide assessment projects of academic advising services; report assessment data as requested. |

Minimum Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
-Academic advising experience in engineering or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors
-Experience in general education and articulation requirements in the California public higher education system -Industry experience, and/or experience in careers related to the fields of engineering and technology. -Experience with academic programs and topic of degree programs offered by the College of Engineering. |

-Knowledge with university-level communication and/or ability to learn and communicate university level policies.
-Ability to coordinate academic and non-academic events. -Ability to work evenings as needed for orientations and special events. -Ability to drive on university business. -Ability to maintain a valid driver's license. -Ability to moderate international graduate student open forums. -Ability to use statistical tools to summarize student data and extract useful information. -Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required. -Knowledge and sensitivity to issues faced by SJSU students generally, and College of Social Sciences majors specifically. -Knowledge of related software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, CMS, etc.). -Excellent oral and written communication skills. -Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operations problems of one or several program areas. -Ability to plan and conduct workshops, assist with organization of special events or activities, and make effective presentations before groups. |
