About the Position

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) and under limited supervision, the Lead markets San Jose State University (SJSU) and facilitates the admission process of all service area high schools and community college students. The Lead Admission Counselor and Recruitment Programs Coordinator, promotes and directs recruitment events both on and off campus. The lead collaborates with various SJSU constituents, high schools, community colleges, and other members of the educational community to promote San Jose State University; providing services, accurate and timely information, to ensure that prospective students make informed decisions in the admission process. The lead works within the applicable policies established by appropriate federal, state, system, and campus entities. The Lead is the point of contact for the SOAR team; provides training, ensures that policies, and procedures are communicated and followed.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: - Assists in leading the day to day operations of the SOAR unit; helps Manager to develop and implement appropriate methods and procedures to provide effective and successful admission and recruitment information for students, colleges, and the educational community. - Supports the Associate Director in the implementation of campus events such as preview, application sessions, admit days and yield events that are directed to prospective students and families, and requiring collaboration with SJSU departments, colleges, and student groups. - Leads and coordinates the work of SOAR staff and student workers. Trains and contributes to performance evaluations, delegates and reviews assignments and projects, evaluates work projects and results, and establishes and monitors timelines to prioritize work. - Provides input in the development of marketing and recruiting strategies that are responsive to Enrollment Management needs. - Collaborates with Communications and Publications to develop training materials and presentations for internal and external use. - Analyze, interpret, and explain policies to staff members in these positions also provide clarification on policies and procedures to other SJSU offices and representatives from graduate program offices/advisors that have questions. - Develops and recommends courses of action, implements proposed solutions, plans and coordinates training activities for staff with multifaceted work assignments regarding all processes related to the work distribution, processes, communications, and implementation. - Provides academic advising, counseling, analysis, and assessment for new and returning graduate students and prospective applicants attempting to complete Title 5, CSU and University requirements relating to graduate admission, degree candidacy and graduation requirements. - Provide information regarding policies and procedures to suggest actions which will resolve issues and to establish cordial and collegial relationships with those contacting the Office of Admissions and Outreach. |

Minimum Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related and four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A master¿s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling.

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.
Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses. |

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or equivalent training, education, and experience.
- Four years of professional level experience in higher education working with student service functions; admissions, outreach and recruitment, program development or academic support programs. |

- Thorough knowledge of individual counseling techniques, and general knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
- Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters - Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature. - Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions, and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. - Ability to reason logically and analyze and solve organizational and operating problems of one or several program areas. - Ability to plan, coordinate, and initiate actions necessary to implement administrative or group decisions or recommendations. - Ability to analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. - Knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling to be able to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports. - Thorough knowledge of software applications: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management. - Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. - Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions. - Ability to interpret information from a variety of institutions, including foreign institutions, with differing record systems. - Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment, handle multiple work priorities, and organize and plan work and projects. - Ability to perform the work lead functions as assigned. - Ability to make sound decisions, work efficiently under pressure, and work independently and as part of a team as required. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Excellent customer service and public relations skills. - Ability to work evenings and weekends as required during heavy processing periods. - Ability to travel to other geographic locations and work evenings and weekend hours. - Ability to possess a valid California Driver¿s license at the time of hire, for the operation of any state vehicle required to perform the essential functions of the job. - Ability to complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses. |
