About the Position
|

The purpose of the University Ombudsperson position is to serve as an impartial party to receive student complaints, provide information, facilitate communication, and offer conflict resolution between students and members of the university community (faculty, staff, and administrators) in a confidential environment. The University Ombudsperson also makes referrals to other offices, depending on the nature of the case. The nature of the work performed by the University Ombudsperson is highly sensitive and requires interpretation of CSU and university policy and procedures.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: -Interview campus constituents for purpose of identifying concerns and determining causes of problems and/or complaints. Meets with individuals and help analyze the situation. -Explains relevant CSU and university policies and procedures, which may require interpretation -Assists in identifying appropriate course of action. Assist students with informal resolution and Student Fairness Committee petition process. -Consults with faculty and staff regarding concerns, grievances, and/or complaints -Follows up to ensure concerns are resolved -Mediates discussions between parties when appropriate -Makes referrals to the Student Fairness Committee (SFC) when appropriate. -Administer to the Student Fairness Committee and assist students with preparing petitions for committee review. -Recruit administrator, faculty and staff to serve on Student Fairness Committee -Provide orientation and training for committee members -Interpret policy governing the Student Fairness Committee and policies related to specific complaints -Present at department meetings, college, division, and student organization or program meetings to explain the role of the University Ombudsperson or topics related to campus policies. This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations. |

Education and Experience
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
A Bachelor's Degree in a social science field (e.g. sociology, psychology) and five years of full-time progressively responsible student services work experience, including experience with conflict resolution, interpreting policy, and working with confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||
-A Master's Degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or a related field.
-Experience serving in an Ombudsperson (or similar) role at a college or university. -Experience working with first generation diverse college students and staff. -Experience collaborating across institutional lines. -Experience working with students, faculty, and staff in a University setting that have concerns, grievances, and or complaints. |

-Knowledge of student development theories relevant to a metropolitan university, demonstrated sensitivity, and understanding of the needs of SJSU' diverse student body.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with students, employees and external agencies -Ability to mediate conflicts and provide dispute resolution in a fair and objective manner. -Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, administrators and staff. -Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment. -Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects. -Ability to analyze data and synthesize information into a summary report. -Ability to function well independently and within a team. -Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine and sensitive topics -Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. -Excellent written and oral communication skills -Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, faculty, students, and the general public. -Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. -Excellent customer service and public relation skills. |
