Position Summary
The Assistant Dean for Students provides administrative leadership and vision to advance student and career development initiatives at GSSW, serving the Denver campus, two distance campuses and the MSW@Denver online program. The role provides administrative oversight to transform GSSW’s registrar and student and career services departments toward an innovative model that expands GSSW’s programs to be accessible, relevant, and meaningful to students. The role oversees the development of co-curricular programs and initiatives that cultivate student leadership, health and wellness, and academic success. The Assistant Dean for Students hires, mentors and supervises at least 7 full-time professionals across the registrar’s office and career and academic advising teams.
The Assistant Dean for Students reports to the Associate Dean for Operations/Chief of Staff and works closely with GSSW’s associate and assistant deans and department leaders. A key requirement of this position is to promote teamwork and collaboration. As such, exceptional communication skills, a positive approach to program-solving, data-driven decision-making, and exacting customer service standards are essential.
Essential Functions
- Provide administrative leadership and vision to expand GSSW’s student and career development services and insure efficiency in the registrar’s office. Position directly supervises staff across career services, student engagement and registrar offices.
- Oversee the development and implementation of advising models aligned to best practices and evidence-based strategies for student retention.
- Foster a culture of student learning, academic excellence, and success as related to the professional expectations of a social worker, the power, privilege, and oppression curriculum, and aligned to the NASW code of ethics.
- Develop and monitor operating budgets in partnership with Director of Budget and Planning.
- Develop collaborative relationships with DU’s Offices of Campus Life, Academic Affairs, and University Advancement to advance individual and joint goals aligned to GSSW’s strategic plan and DU’s 2025 strategic plan.
- Serve as the DU Rights and Responsibilities liaison for GSSW and provide leadership on the Outcomes Council on an appointed basis. Ensure all GSSW faculty and staff are trained according to FERPA regulations and mandates.
- Oversee the process and efficiency for case management and records and data tracking during student leaves of absence and re-entry, academic and/or personal struggles, retention concerns and health and wellness challenges of students.
- Oversee the strategic development of student engagement initiatives within and between Denver, Glenwood Springs, Durango, and MSW@Denver programs and ensure co-curricular and career development opportunities and training targeting online, distance, and part-time student needs. Ensure that students have ample opportunity to connect with professors and the Dean outside of the classroom.
- Closely coordinate communication with associate and assistant deans, department chairs, and other faculty to ensure that the student and career services team is meeting the needs and expectations for both students and the field of social work, lead the GSSW Career Consortium of faculty, alumni, and prospective employers to enhance measurable career outcomes for the GSSW student body and alumni.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Social Work or related field.
- 5+ years in management, including data management and supervision experience.
- 2+ years in Higher Education administration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in related field.
- Change management experience.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm with some evenings and weekends.
