The Department of Languages & Literatures at the University of Denver (DU) is an undergraduate department offering majors in French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish, and minors in those languages plus Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, and Latin, with electives in Arabic and classical Greek. The department currently has 39 full-time faculty (17 tenure-line, 14 teaching-line, and eight visiting teaching faculty). Spanish is the largest program with 17 full-time faculty. The program offers language courses from the introductory to the advanced levels as well as advanced interdisciplinary thematic courses in Latino, Latin American, and Iberian literature and culture. Spanish faculty also contribute to general education courses in English. Position Summary
The Department of Languages & Literatures invites applications for a full-time position as a Teaching Assistant Professor of Spanish. This is a non-tenure track position with full benefits and initial three-year contract; contract is renewable and promotion is possible.
Appointment begins in Fall 2019.
The successful candidate will be a versatile instructor with experience teaching a wide array of language and culture courses. They will primarily teach first and second-year language classes and may also teach conversation and composition, and/or (Latin American, US Latinx or Iberian) culture and literature courses, according to qualifications and program needs. The successful candidate will contribute to diversity and Inclusive Excellence through their teaching and service.
Essential Functions
TEACHING:
- Teaching load is eight classes distributed over three academic quarters.
- Primary teaching responsibilities will be in first-and second-year Spanish language.
OTHER SERVICE:
- Participate in department meetings and committees.
- Active collaboration with faculty in Spanish, including work on Spanish subcommittees and departmental committees.
- Participate in annual Spanish program assessment, placement advising, and major advising.
- Some opportunities for participating in service outside of the department.
RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP:
- Active scholarship is desirable and supported, though it is not a job requirement for this position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Interest and ability to work effectively with under-served populations.
- Experience with instructional design and technology-enhanced learning.
- Familiarity with inclusive pedagogy.
- Experience with service learning desirable.
Required Qualifications
- MA at time of application; specialization in Spanish or a closely related field.
- Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.
- Experience and accomplishments in active support of diversity and inclusiveness.
- Record of excellence teaching Spanish language to students in the US at the college or university level. Equivalent experience from a college or university outside of the US will also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD (or ABD) at the time of appointment; specialization in Spanish or a closely related field
