Diversity Profile

Commitment to Equal Opportunity:

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks to reflect the diversity of the global community within which it exists. Cultural differences are recognized, valued, and considered essential to the educational process and working environment. Therefore, the University promotes understanding and mutual respect of all members of the community. UMUC provides an academic and social environment, that encourages new ideas, an eagerness to learn, and positive working conditions.

UMUC "embraces the world".

As a result, The Office of Diversity Initiatives was established in April 2000 to promote diversity and human relations through the collaborative efforts of a Diversity Council composed of staff and faculty from UMUC-Stateside, UMUC-Asia, and UMUC-Europe.

We are also responsible for ensuring compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) policies. We assist all university departments and divisions in resolving affirmative action, EEO and ADA issues that may interfere with productivity and human relations in the workplace, and we work toward ensuring that the university employs and retains a diverse workforce.

Commitment to Diversity:

Disability Services

UMUC recognizes students on the merits of their abilities rather than their disabilities.

Mission

At UMUC, our primary goal is commitment to our students' success and to an educational partnership. In alignment with the university's core goals, the mission of Disability Services (DS) is to coordinate support services that provide equal academic opportunities to individuals with disabilities. Through our initiatives, students can participate in all aspects of UMUC's programs and services, while adhering to the university's academic standards. In compliance with the requirements set forth by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the DS office seeks to provide the best accommodations and services possible to qualified students. We are dedicated to working collaboratively with students, faculty and staff to achieve a welcoming and equitable learning environment that not only fosters students' academic pursuits, but also is responsive to meeting their needs.
