General Summary:
The Success Boston Initiative (SBI) Coach, within the unit of Academic Support Services and Undergraduate Studies, works with newly and currently enrolled first-year and/or transfer students who graduated from the Boston Public Schools (BPS) or attended a designated community college and provides support through the college transition and connection stages to significantly improve their persistence and graduation rates. The SBI Success Coach’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, working with a caseload of approximately 75-100+ students and assisting them in managing non-academic issues and referring students to advising, academic, and other appropriate support services on-campus, when necessary. The incumbent will participate in the development, organization, and enhancement of intentional community building workshops, in collaboration with the SBI Team; will prepare and submit reports on contact with students and their progress; and will conduct meetings at key times in throughout the academic with all students in the caseload.
Examples of Duties:
- Provide one-on-one and/or small group coaching to newly and currently enrolled first-year and transfer students who graduated from Boston Public Schools (BPS) or attended a designated community college; provide support through the college transition and connection stages to improve their persistence and graduation rates;
- Work with a caseload of approximately 75-100+ first-year and/or transfer students and assist students in managing non-academic issues, referring students to advising, academic, and other support services on campus; conduct check-ins at key times throughout the academic year with each student in assigned caseload;
- Build a rapport with students and help them connect to advising, academic, and other appropriate support services and to participate in co- and extra-curricular activities;
- Monitor and assess academic progress of students in the caseload; provide students with personalized guidance and coaching on decisions that may prevent them from persisting at the university;
- In collaboration with the SBI team, participate in the development, organization, and enhancement of intentional community building activities and promotion of the Success Boston Initiative;
- Attend monthly UMB/SBI Coaches meetings, Advising Collaborative, and city-wide Success Boston Coaches’ meetings to stay informed about changes to university programs, policies and procedures; connect with other coaches in the city-wide initiative to discuss best practices for working with the students, as well as participate in professional development provided by the university of the city-wide initiative;
- In collaboration with the Success Boston Initiative Coordinator, promote the Success Boston Initiative to all incoming and continuing first-year and transfer students who graduated from BPS or transfer in from a designated community college;
- Prepare and submit semester reports to the Success Boston Initiative Coordinator regarding students’ progress towards graduation, student contact, and academic performance;
- Utilize university resources to resolve students’ issues and support their success and persistence;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one-three years of experience working in public higher education or with urban public school students, preferably in a college access or college-readiness program, required. The incumbent will be required to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and/or weekends, as needed.

- Demonstrated knowledge of the transition from high school to college or 2-year to 4-year institutions;
- Knowledge and ability to utilize office equipment and computer software and programs;
- Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as a member of a team;
- Proven ability to work cooperatively with staff, students, and on- and off-campus partners and community members;
- Ability to collect, organize, retrieve and explain data;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills;
- Strong commitment to customer and student service.
