Assistant or Associate Professor in Human Microbial Systems/Immunology
General Summary of Position:
The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member with expertise and research interests in human microbial systems/immunology as it relates to the microbiota in human health and disease. The candidate will be appointed at the assistant or associate, professor level, commensurate with qualifications.
Applicants should have knowledge and research experience in modern methods of microbiome-host ecology and be familiar with current experimental and analytical tools for studying the microbiome, such as metagenomics, in human health and disease. Potential research foci may include host-microbiome interactions, microbiome-immunological interactions; mechanisms underlying microbiota-immune control in infectious disease and infection models; system/chemical biology approaches to problems of host-microbiome interactions at barrier sites; expertise in computational biology is strongly preferred.
The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences is located within the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences. The Zuckerberg College is a dynamic, growing college that prepares professionals and scientists in a wide range of health science fields including applied, clinical, and translational areas. Candidates should have a successful track record of extramural funding and show significant potential to garner continued funding to support their research programs. The candidate should show ability to work with multidisciplinary researchers within the department and the university, and desire to work as a team.
We seek applicants recognized for teaching excellence, scholarly productivity, ability to work with diverse populations, and excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Ability and interest in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels is required. Faculty are engaged in service to the college as required.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- A PhD in nutritional biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, or other related biomedical sciences fields
- Assistant Professors are required to have at lease 2 years of post-doctoral experience
- The ability to work effectively with diverse groups and an interest in building a strong core of scientists within the scope of microbiome research
- Strong record of high visibility research and publication
- Evidence of ability to develop an independent research program and secure extramural funding
Additional Considerations:
- Assistant professor candidates must have a clearly defined research program with a strong likelihood of funding
- Associate professor candidates must have a strong record of research with a record of active extramural research support, preferably federal
- Experience in fostering interdisciplinary research initiatives
Preferred Qualifications:
- Discipline-specific teaching experience preferred
- Experience developing graduate-level courses in the area of expertise
