Our Mission 

The University of North Carolina Wilmington, the state’s coastal university, is dedicated to learning through the integration of teaching and mentoring with research and service. Our powerful academic experience stimulates creative inquiry, critical thinking, thoughtful expression and responsible citizenship in an array of high-quality programs at the baccalaureate and master’s levels, and in our doctoral programs in marine biology and educational leadership. Substantial research activity, combined with our hallmark teaching excellence and moderate size, advances distinctive student involvement in faculty scholarship. UNCW was placed on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. While UNCW has been on the list for five straight years, it earned the “with distinction” honor after students dedicated 70,000 hours to service learning and volunteerism throughout the Wilmington community – 20,000 hours more than the previous year.

Faculty Profile

UNCW employs 602 full-time and 362 part-time faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health and Human Services, Cameron School of Business, Center for Marine Science, Graduate School, Randall Library and Watson College of Education. A majority of faculty hold doctorate or other terminal degree.

Princeton Review

For the fourth consecutive year, UNCW has been named one of the nation’s “Best Value” Public Colleges and Universities by The Princeton Review.

U.S.News & World Report

The University of North Carolina Wilmington is recognized as one of the five best public master's university in the South, according to the 2013 U.S. News & World Report rankings for regional universities.

Fiske Guide to Colleges

For the fourth consecutive year, the UNCW is part of the exclusive group of colleges and universities included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges.

GI Jobs

UNCW was named by G.I. Jobs to its 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools.

Poets & Writers

UNCW's Master of Fine Arts in creative writing program was named second in the nation for creative nonfiction in the 2011 MFA rankings in Poets & Writers magazine.

According to the Education Trust report Advancing to Completion (September 2012), UNCW is #5 among the top 25 gainers in Black Student Graduation rates among public institutions 2004-2010 increasing from 40 percent in 2004 to 61.4 percent in 2010.

And UNCW is #2 among top 25 in graduation rate gap closers among public institutions 2004-2010, decreasing the graduation gap from 22.5 percent to 5.2 percent. Also according to the report, it is projected that by “2018 the nation will need another 22 million new college degrees and 63% of the jobs will require a post-secondary degree by that time”. UNCW efforts to increase the success of African American students are a key aspect of university wide efforts and support for the university diversity goals.
