Welcome to the Profile of the "Jewel" of the University System of Georgia, Valdosta State University. Our mission as a Regional University is to provide an educational environment which fosters special concern for the needs of the individual student, while providing the best of instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are located in south Georgia near coastal resorts on a Spanish Mission-style campus, nationally recognized for its beauty.

Founded in 1906 as South Georgia State Normal College, the school became Georgia State Women's College in 1922. In 1950 the school became coeducational and changed its name to Valdosta State College. On July 1, 1993 it became Valdosta State University. It is located on I-75 in Valdosta, Georgia, a city of 40,000+ population. The 168 acre campus, serves an area stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Alabama state line, containing 31% of the land area of the state. Enrollment has increased steadily and VSU now has a student body of 11,500 representing 48 states and 50 countries. Small classes, at all levels, are taught by 500 well qualified faculty members. VSU offers unique cultural and educational opportunities to business, industry and the public of South Georgia through performances, workshops, institutes, and continuing education programs.

Technologically, VSU is on the cutting edge of development. The campus has a fully operational fiber-optic data network with 24 state-of-the-art student computer labs, all networked to Peachnet and Internet. The Odum Library, through its Galileo workstations, offers on-line network access to infinite source materials beyond its own 1.3 million entries. Distance learning classes enhance the ability of the University to offer classes at multiple sites via the statewide GSAMS network. Throughout the University, students are encouraged to attain technological competence and computer literacy which are vital for achievement today.
