Commitment to Diversity:

WVSOM is committed to educating all students from all backgrounds.

"The mission of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is to educate students from diverse backgrounds as lifelong learners in osteopathic medicine and complementary health related programs; to advance scientific knowledge through academic, clinical and basic science research; and to promote patient-centered, evidence based medicine.  WVSOM is dedicated to serve, first and foremost, the state of West Virginia and the special health care needs of its residents, emphasizing primary care in rural areas."

Diversity Resources:

WVSOM is also committed to fostering diversity amongst its students, faculty, and staff.  There are many committees and clubs dedicated to diversity including the following:

  • - Committee for Multicultural Affairs which fosters an intercultural understanding on campus through cross cultural activism, reflection and dialogue. CMA promotes curricular educational and cultural programs to increase awareness regarding the ways in which individual experiences impact healthcare for families and individuals.
  • - PAX: PAX promotes diversity and cultural sensitivity on campus and in the Lewisburg community through education and community service; and is also a support group for any WVSOM student who considers him/herself a minority or a member of a group which is under represented in the medical profession.

Several clubs, including PAX, extend their service commitment to underserved nations such as Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala during holiday breaks. This experience further expands the opportunity for students to work with diverse populations in preparation for eventual practice in a global society.
