Minimum Qualifications |

Purpose of Job |
The purpose of the position is to implement ESL Institutes for international students. The program is expected to operate year-long offering two sessions each fall and spring semesters and one session in the summer. The position is housed in the Office of Global Programs (OGP), Multicultural and International Affairs Building. In addition to ESLI, the person in this position will participate in student recruiting for the ESL, provide support for international students and assist in the implementation of other program activities in OGP. |
Scope of Responsibilities |
Work with the director of Global Programs and selected faculty members to update ESLI program curricula for ESL levels 2 – 4 and TOEFL preparation Recruit students into the program, Implement ESL Institutes, Monitoring of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for students, international student support (in collaboration with other OGP staff) to facilitate the integration of ESL students into the general university population Work with Global Programs staff, undergraduate admissions office, graduate studies and other units on campus to ensure a seamless transition of ESLI graduates into academic degree programs at Alcorn State University Participate in internationally-related activities (e.g., lecture series, international education week, multicultural festival, seminars, International and Multicultural Student Organization, and others). |
Essential Job Functions |
Preparing lesson plans; teaching multiple levels of ESL; monitoring students’ progress through regular testing; advising students on ESL-related matters; supervising undergraduate and graduate student assistants; collecting data to evaluate program outcomes, as needed. |
Qualifications |
Masters’ degree in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) ot TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Linguistics, English or a related field of study with emphasis in TESL or TESOL. Prior ESL teaching experience is expected. |
Licensing and Certifications |
TESL Certification, TESOL Certification, or an equivalent certification. |
Knowledge Skills and Abilities |
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and excellent customer service and professionalism are required. Fluency (or working knowledge) of at least one official language of the United Nations (other than English) is preferred. Priority will be given to applicants with prior experience in the teaching and implementation of English as a Second Language. Also, preference will be given to applicants with excellent knowledge of the global setting (e.g., study abroad) and/or living in countries other than the United States. Familiarity with TOEFL requirements (or equivalent language tests) for university admission is required. |
